Core Techniques for Public Speaking

Public speaking skills training is practice on one speaking skill at a time, with feedback. The O*NET database lists speaking as an essential skill: talking to others to convey information effectively. The core techniques of public speaking are five skills:

Structure your message
An opening, a few main points and a close.
Simplify your notes
Keywords, not a script, so you look up.
Own your posture
Steady feet, open shoulders; body language speaks first.
Control your voice
Pace, volume, pauses; voice projection reaches the back row.
Engage with eye contact
One person per thought, then move on.

How to Train and Build Your Skills

Training is repetition with feedback, and it works. A 2019 meta-analysis of 30 randomized trials (1,355 people) found that interventions reduce fear of public speaking, that gains kept growing after treatment ended, and that technology-assisted programs match face-to-face ones. A 2025 study of 1,130 medical students called for structured training. The NIMH notes that CBT helps people learn and practice social skills, and that group formats help too. For a week-by-week version, see public speaking training as a plan.

Record yourself

Record, replay once, change one thing. An AmberWillo guide to skills training notes that AI apps comment on pace, filler words or eye contact but lack human insight. Or let Confidently score it free.

Join a practice group

The same guide says live online courses for anxious speakers often run in groups of up to 15. The practice-group column, online: a small room, real people, a score after each round. That room is AmberWillo: you and up to fourteen others with the same goal, speaking out loud on camera, free to start.

Take structured courses

AmberWillo's skills training article describes classes as structured practice with professional feedback.

What a good training includes

The AmberWillo page on anxiety skills training lists what a structured program targets. Check options against it:

  • Topic selection
  • Research for your talk
  • Organization of your points
  • Delivery: voice, body, eyes
  • Self-evaluation after each talk

Reader questions

What is public speaking training called?

Names vary: public speaking classes, presentation skills training or speech courses. Anxiety programs call it "skills training".

Are there free public speaking classes?

Yes. Alison's courses are free (a certificate costs a little), and the Coursera course above is free to enroll. AmberWillo's group sessions cost nothing to begin, and Confidently's phone test costs nothing.

How do I train myself to speak in public?

Pick one skill from the matrix, record a short take, fix one thing. Repeat, then add real listeners so your nerves get practice too.

What are 3 P's in public speaking?

There isn't one fixed set of three. AmberWillo's skills training guide uses five P's: purpose, passion, preparation, practice and performance.

What is a public speaking class in college?

Usually an intro communication course: you give speeches to classmates and the instructor grades them.
